GEORGE GORDON, R.I.P.
Everyone he played in front of loved him, Todd Rundgren, Rick Derringer, Rick Nielsen (no slouches themselves...) He loved to play pop like The Ventures, but I saw him play blistering Johnny Winter solos note-for-note. His ear was incredible. He could pick out nuances in recordings that escaped everyone else. I remember a show we played in Woodstock, NY, where we brought along a young guy from Portland as a roadie. In the audience were Todd Rundgren, most of Cheap Trick - Rick Nielsen, Bun E. Carlos and Robin Zander, a songwriter named Jules Shear, etc. George broke a string. George almost never broke strings, so I don't think he had a back-up guitar, then. Our roadie quickly restrung the guitar, tuned it and handed it back to George. George looked at Rooster and we burst into the next song. Whoa! George hit the first chord and made an incredibly sour face. The new string had been tuned an octave low! We just plowed ahead, and George played his parts while tuning the string! It was truly awe inspiring. The guitar was completely in tune by the end, and all the guitar players in the audience were on their feet cheering! Rick Nielsen was wearing a pin of his signature 5 neck guitar, and after the show he took it off and pinned it on George, saying that it was one of the most amazing performances he'd ever seen. Then, he turned to me, twiddled his fingers in the air and said, "Great Bassing..." A night I'll never forget.

Secret ServiceWe're spies... Get it?
Shortly after Secret Service disbanded, Von and I got tapped for a series of gigs with Pinetop Perkins, legendary blues piano player. We didn't last long, however. After a dispute about money with his manager, we packed our gear and left. 'Tops' was cool, though. There was no set list; he just called out the songs by key. He'd look up and say "B flat..." and we'd follow him.

A Little Rock'n'Roll Incest The old bass player from Bebe's band (whose name escapes me, now... sorry) joined Carol and the Charmers, and I played with Bebe & the B-Sides, then I left and eventually joined Carol and the Charmers, I moved to NYC, Steve, the guitar player, joined Bebe's band and George, Bebe's old guitar player, started a new band with Carol. Phew! Try and say that all in one breath...

Who The Hell Is Mighty Joe Young?
Well, besides the King Kong rip-off from the 40's, it was a NYC super-group, of sorts. Joey Ramone was always trying to get me to play bass with his brothers' band, but I did the next best thing - stole his singer for my band. Actually, it was Chris (ex-Sluts) who stole him, I just went along for the ride. We chose as our model an obscure band from Seattle called Alice in Chains, a pretty bold step for the time. Everyone was still listening to Winger, Warrant and Wid, I mean Skid Row. The biggest band coming out of NYC then was, well, it was the Cycle Sluts. Along with Michael, Chris and I grabbed Adam from my days with Kat and started marketing. Chris hooked up some studio time on spec, I got Bob Gruen (Rock photographer to the stars) to shoot some photos of us and we booked shows. We handed out a killer package to every label exec, management rep and industry hack we knew. Everybody liked it, but they all said Atlantic had just signed a band from San Diego called Mighty Joe Young with a similar sound and they were going to push them. Frustrated with the whole thing, I left the band and NYC behind for the green (i.e. very wet) mountains of Seattle. I never heard about Mighty Joe Young again and figured it was just another case of 'Major Label hype.' Years later, I found out that Mighty Joe Young had changed their name to Stone Temple Pilots... shit...

When Timmy wasn't playing guitar, he was carrying one around. Here he is with his girlfriend, Alicia.
TIMMY ROXXX, R.I.P.
He was truly what they call, 'a force of nature.' He was filled with raw enthusiasm, desire and creativity. I tried to rein him in a bit and teach him the merits of simple, melodic playing, but he was always happiest when he was shredding. He answered our ad in the "Rocket" for a guitar player. I spoke to him on the phone, and said that we would be scheduling auditions at a local studio. I told him about some of the people I'd played with. After hearing the name Jake E. Lee, he stopped me and said, "I'm coming right over." No one expected the whirlwind that descended on us next. Timmy came into the living room of the little house on Queen Anne Hill where we lived (watch the movie, "Singles,") set up his full Marshall stack, cranked it and proceeded to peel the paint off the walls with his searing solos. He didn't bother playing songs or chords, just scales, licks and whammy bar... really, really fast! Todd, Ben and I sat in stunned silence watching him. Ten minutes later, when I stopped Timmy from torturing the neighbors, I had no idea how we were going to fit him into this power pop idea we had, but we all knew he was 'the guy.' He was a massively talented and motivated musician and a loyal and loving friend. I miss him.
